Monthly Meeting – Feb 3, 2022 – “U.S. Census” by Cathy Andrews

Since 1790, the U.S. Census has been a resource both for community planning and for genealogists. The wealth of information can help establish or confirm details about an ancestor’s life. We’ll talk about all the things that Census has and doesn’t have for genealogical research including supplementary documents and unexpected notations.

Cathy Andrews is Senior Librarian for Adult Services with the Salinas Public Library, where she teaches the “Genealogy Basics” series and oversees genealogy resources, services and programming. Growing up in a family where stories and details about ancestors were woven into every family gathering, she has a deep appreciation for genealogy’s challenges and rewards.

The Zoom meeting will start at 7:00 pm sharp. Zoom meeting details will be sent by invitation only. If you are not a member and wish to attend, send an email with your email address to our Membership VP, Marilyn Ruccello .

Monthly Meeting – Jan 6, 2022 – “Monterey County Cemeteries” by Shelley McFadden

This meeting will start with a short, but required Annual Business Meeting for Election of Officers. This will be followed by a presentation and group interaction with Shelley McFadden, exploring Monterey County Cemeteries. She will explain a process that everyone can use to research their own family cemeteries. Monterey County Genealogy Society over the years, since their existence, has been working on researching, collecting, and preserving the burial information for many cemeteries found in Monterey County. It has been a small, dedicated group of volunteers, that have spent many hours and years, obtaining information from the many headstones in these local cemeteries. In recent projects we have worked with the Monterey County Historical Society to achieve the most complete list of burials in selected cemeteries, plus adding many of the missing. With the combination of Newspapers, Ancestry, FamilySearch, and Find_a_Grave websites, we have learned more deeply about the burials in Monterey County and their family connections. We will review some our findings and learn our process to achieve a more complete understanding of burials.

Shelley McFadden holds a BFA in Fine Arts at the University of Hawaii and is a retired RN from CHOMP. She has worked for over 40 yrs on her family genealogy. Her focus has been on PA, MD, DE, NC & SC, NY, OH, and New England. She is currently the 1st VP – Programs Chair of the Monterey County Genealogical Society. She is a member of the DAR Commodore Sloat Chapter, and Assoc. member of the Aloha Chapter in Hawaii. She is a Charter member of the Colonial Dames in Hawaii. She specializes in Newspaper Research. She is currently working on research in the Monterey County Cemeteries with Jeannie Pedersen, Tina Magill, Barbara Brown, Graig Stephens, Soledad Historical Society, and with James Perry, the Director of the Monterey County Historical Society.
